At present, according to proclamation by the North Carolina Homestead Exemption Act,
an individual may claim up top $10,000 equity exempt from judgments,
attachment, or execution of liens, subject to several well ingrained
exceptions. North Carolina homestead exemption law allows spouses to
double the amount, up to $20,000. The exceptions pertain to purchase
liens, tax liens, and mechanics liens. these liens may however be
defeated when filing a plan for repayment under Chapter 13 bankruptcy
provisions.
