Internet Access To Public Record Bankruptcy Filings

Help Finding Lawyers and Attorney Fee Guidelines

The federal database of all filings nationwide is available for public view. Because all cases generate a public record, bankruptcy filings, dockets, pleadings, motions, orders and current status may be downloaded or reviewed online for a small account fee. The PACER system allows either internet access through a secure connection, or direct access through a dial-in account. In either case, fees are nominal.

Because of the potential threat of identity theft, truncation of account numbers is now mandatory. In the past, all financial accounts were listed individually, and also included names, addresses, social security numbers and an extreme amount of personal financial information. Today, by federal law, information available is generally limited to name, address, company and amounts owed. As the public record of bankruptcy filings evolves, ease of access increases almost simultaneously.
