Maine Homestead Exemption Exceptions

Help Finding Lawyers and Attorney Fee Guidelines

Because of the Maine homestead exemption law, creditors may not attach or execute judgments against a primary residence. This protection is subject to the exceptions set forth in the Maine Homestead Exemption Act, including liens created securing the purchase of property, mechanic's liens incurred for improvements or repairs, and tax liens created by statutory authority.

The total value that be claimed when filing Chapter 7 is limited to $35,000, and may be supported by tax documentation and valuation, as well as the Maine homestead exemption form if filed for record.
